Spring/Summer 2011
Here’s to a More Colorful Future
Many cultures around the globe embrace bright, vibrant colors. Americans are as fascinated by color as anyone, but often we suppress our own use of it. We think it is only for the bohemians, artists and eccentrics. As kids we never shied away from our amazing colored crayons and paints.
Why then do so many American adults seem to prefer quiet, dignified colors? I think people worry that bold hues will be unsettling when in fact they can create a cozy, joyous atmosphere. This spring and summer, try thinking outside the box. Breathe some life into your home with a big splash of color. Nervous? Use vibrant color as an accent. If you use bright tones in the details, it adds an elegant punch.

Try using a range of the same color in a room. Pale blue and rich, deep cobalt add a kick to this family room.

Go for it this spring. Commit to trying an intense color, if only on an accent. Your colors will “pop” and everyone will love them. It doesn’t need to be riotous or heavily patterned color. Your house can incorporate bright colors and still be a peaceful, quiet home.
