Friedman Victorian, Melrose, MA (Italianate, 1860)

Friedman House, Before Friedman House, after

This house has many lovely details that had been obscured by thick layers of white paint. It had not been owner occupied for the last 10 years. The new owners purchased the house looking forward to restoring it. Neighbors have said, “I never really noticed this house before”. The owners wanted to change this. Their goal was to bring life to the house and create a sophisticated but welcoming color palette. Historic accuracy was not a priority.

Last August, the house was televised on HGTV for a special show called The Endless Yard Sale. They followed the homeowner for a week during the sale and then filmed the house as part of the program (looking for antiques for a restored Victorian house...). My clients were thrilled to have their house featured on TV. “Lots of people recognized the house and they asked about the paint colors in particular. I directed everyone to your website and/or showed them your book!”

Gunn House, Canfield, Ohio

Gunn House, before Gunn House, after

This house is a Connecticut Valley design and was built in 1979-80. It was patterned after the Dwight-Barnard house in Deerfield, Massachusetts, but without the dormers. It is located in Canfield Township which is in the southeastern corner of the Connecticut Western Reserve, where many of the homes and buildings have a "New England" feel.

Gunn House, DetailThe house is 4400 square feet and is located on a 3.5 acre, wooded lot. Most of the lumber used for the interior trim, floors, doors, etc. is cherry and oak which the owners harvested (cut, sawed, kiln dried, planed, sanded, etc.) from a nearby family farm. There are 5 fireplaces. The front part of the house is 3 stories high.

The exterior is cedar siding and redwood trim. The foundation is red brick. The roof is dark brown asphalt shingles.

The house was painted in a gray/brown stain with very dark brown trim. The client wanted to see a brighter, livelier color scheme. I provided the client with 15 possible color schemes for his house which met his criteria "for a gracious and uplifing mood; making the house salable and attractive and having people say, Wow, this is beautiful".

The client was thrilled with the result. "The color scheme you provided is wonderful, we love it!
